There is no room for preventable mistakes in an emergency
Firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and law enforcement officers are trained to handle emergencies. Autism-related calls add communication, sensory, behavioral, medical, search, and safety considerations that may not be covered in traditional instruction.
An individual may not respond to commands, may fear touch, may run or hide, may repeat words, or may react strongly to lights, sirens, crowds, or changes in routine. These actions can easily be misunderstood without appropriate awareness.
Knowing what to look for and how to adjust the response can lower stress, improve cooperation, and reduce the possibility of injury.

A New Training Initiative
Before the First Call
Before the First Call is an initiative focused on bringing autism awareness and interaction training into fire and EMS cadet education.
After years of trying to reach responders once they are already in the field, we believe the most effective solution is to begin at the start of their careers. By including this training during cadet education, future firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics can enter service better prepared to recognize autism, communicate effectively, and respond safely.
The initiative explains the need, the concept, and how autism awareness and interaction training can become part of preparing the next generation of first responders.
Online Course
Take Our Free Training
Start the Autism Awareness & Interaction Training for First Responders. The course is available online so individuals and departments can learn at their own pace.
Continuing Education Credit Available
Up to five (5) hours of EMS/Paramedic continuing education are available upon successful completion of the training. Nationally accredited through CAPCE. In Florida, hours are reported through CE Broker.
